A Golden Roof Fit For Kings
A dramatic turnaround in the weather this week enabled the team to progress with the covering of our roof in a fabulous new product – a golden quilt called TLX Gold.
The quilt consists of layers of soft insulation and foil, sandwiched between a top layer of tough, waterproof, breathable roofing membrane and a sumptuous base layer of golden foil material.
Kingspan insulation boards were cut to fit tightly between the rafters and with the TLX Gold fitted on the back of the rafters combined with a sealed air gap between the two insulation materials, we have achieved the required U values for our roof.
Everyone on site, including the Building Inspector were so impressed with TLX gold we all now want a jacket made from the fabric!
The new dormer has been insulated with a silver foil quilt called ‘Rafterfit’, draped between the rafters. Above this a triple sandwich of ply and Kingspan insulation boards. Next week the dormer roof will be professionally covered in a tough waterproof single ply membrane called ‘Sarnafil’ giving the dormer roof a smart contemporary finish.
For my part I have moved more than 500 new roof tiles up on to the scaffold, installed insulation, painted steels, de-nailed wood, made numerous trips to the tip, picked up building materials and generally assisted with any task as required. The highlight of my week was stapling my finger instead of the roof membrane – fortunately the holes in my finger were so neat I didn’t lose much blood – but the bone still hurts so maybe I’ve splintered it!
Fantastic Views From The “Triangle Window”
Today Deric and I demolished a large part of the gable end wall ready for the installation of the huge triangular window that is to maximise the fantastic views from Sidmouth Gap to North Dartmoor. Have a look at the video of the views above- fantastic eh?
It is worth mentioning that Deric, being a CAD technician, did all the design and drawings, whilst I, being a Management Accountant, did all the budgeting and cash flow forecasting. If it hadn’t been for the meticulous design, planning & budgeting carried out for months before this project neither Deric or I would have been able to be so ‘hands on’ but thankfully our pre-build work has paid off and everything so far is running like clock-work.
There is even a rumour that tomorrow I may get some time off to have my hair done – I’ll believe it when I’m there.
